How we look after you

Privacy notice

What we collect, why, and the choices you have — in plain language. This follows South Africa's privacy law, known as POPIA.

Last updated: June 2026

Your privacy is the heart of #MyTruth. This explains, simply, what we do with the information you give us. If anything is unclear, please ask.

Who is responsible

#MyTruth is run by TherapyNow NPC. We are responsible for looking after the information you give us. Our Information Officer is Elza Berk, and you can reach them at accounts@therapynow.co.za.

What we collect

When you send a report: your province, the police station, how you were treated (a rating), what happened (a category), and anything you write. You can also choose to add a display name, an email, a WhatsApp number, a date, and an affidavit or document.

When you join the movement: your name, email, and — if you choose — a WhatsApp number.

Why we collect it, and your consent

We use your information to run #MyTruth: to build the anonymous public totals, to keep the space safe, and — only if you ask us to — to gently check in with you or help you take your complaint further. We do this on the basis of your consent, which you give when you tick the box and send your report. You can withdraw that consent at any time.

Sensitive information

Reports can include sensitive things — about crime, safety, or your wellbeing. We treat this with extra care, keep it private, and never publish it.

What is public, and what stays private

Public

  • Anonymous totals and patterns only
  • Never your name
  • Never your words
  • Never your documents

Private (our team only)

  • Your report in your words
  • Your contact details
  • Any documents you attach
  • Whether you asked us to check in

Who can see your information

Only our small, trained review team. We never sell your information or give it to advertisers. We will only ever pass it to an oversight body (like IPID) or a journalist if you specifically ask us to and agree.

Children

Please don't include details that identify a child. If a report tells us that a child — or a vulnerable adult — is being harmed, the law may require us to report it to the authorities to keep them safe. We will always try to act in that person's best interests.

How we keep it safe

We store your information securely, with access limited to the review team. We keep it only as long as we need it for #MyTruth, and then we delete it.

Your rights

You can ask us to see what we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or stop using it, and you can withdraw your consent at any time. To do any of these, email accounts@therapynow.co.za or use the Delete my report page.

If you're unhappy

Please tell us first so we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa — inforegulator.org.za, POPIAComplaints@inforegulator.org.za.

Cookies and the website

This #MyTruth page uses no cookies, no advertising, and no third-party tracking. You don't need an account, we don't follow you around the web, and nothing you type is stored on your device. There's nothing you need to switch off.

Changes

We may update this notice. The latest version, and the date it changed, will always be here.
